2003-04-08 Michael Jackson appearing at the Palm Beach International Film Festival
Appearing as a surprise presenter at the recent Palm Beach International Film Festival was none other than Michael Jackson.
The Palm Beach Post reports that more than 500 guests were stunned when the superstar, who has reportedly been house-hunting in Palm Beach County for several weeks, arrived at the $1,000-a-plate dinner shortly after 8 p.m.
He joined legendary producer Robert Evans at the center table, where several other unannounced guests were seated: actor/comedian Chris Tucker and Brett Ratner, star and director of the popular Rush Hour hits and good friends to Michael. Ratner presented the festival's Lifetime Achievement Award to Evans.
From an artistic perspective, the gala also was a success, thanks in large part to the greatest scheduling coup in its brief history. The event is only eight years old.
The Post reports that Michael had heard about the festival during his house-hunting trip and said he would like to attend.
"It's bigger, it's better, more people are going to festival films this year, and wow! What a night," said Randi Emerman, who is in her second year as the festival's executive director.

2003-03-14 Both Sides Claim Victory in Concert Lawsuit
A California jury ruled in favor Marcel Avram yesterday, awarding the concert promoter $5.3 million in his lawsuit against the King of Pop for "backing out of a deal to perform two concerts on New Year's Eve 1999."
Although Santa Barbara County jurors ruled in favor of concert promoter Marcel Avram - who originally wanted more than $20 million - both sides in the three-month-long trial have claimed victory
"It's a big victory," Avram's lawyer, Louis "Skip" Miller, told The New York Post. "They gave us all the lost profits that we claimed - every penny."
Outside the court however, Michael's lawyers said they're pleased with the award, claiming that they offered to settle this case for about the same amount of money the jury gave Avram.
"Mr. Avram wanted to take off Michael Jackson's head," said Michael's lawyer, Steve Cochran. "The verdict is a financial success."
Neither Cochran nor co-counsel Zia Modabber would discuss Jackson's bottom line. He might appeal, the lawyers said.
But a longtime family friend told The Post that Michael is not in dire financial straits and could pay the full judgment if necessary. Jackson family lawyer Brian Oxman said Michael recently made $20 million off his Take 2 documentary.
"I'm sorry to hear about the verdict [in favor of Avram], but not by any stretch of imagination is he in financial trouble," Oxman said. "No matter what people say about Michael, I can tell you he's a working parent and he knows how to generate revenue."
The lawsuit originally asked for more than $20 million, but Miller said the judge sliced Avram's claims down to about $11 million.
